Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain

Brett D.

Like with chiropractic care, I was skeptical about PT until I went to BTPT and discovered Paul. I had a terrible case of ‘tennis elbow’ which gave me so much discomfort in my right arm.

Todd R.

When I came in and first met Paul and Cole I could barely bend my arm enough to touch my face or wash my hair. Within four weeks of therapy twice per week I’m nearly pain-free and back doing my daily routine without any problems.

Because your hands and arms are so interconnected, your pain may be connected. A task or injury that involves your lower arm can end up causing everything from finger numbness to elbow pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Typing, writing, and jobs that require repetitive lifting are major causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). The debilitating syndrome is named for the tunnel surrounding the nerves connecting your wrist, hand, and fingers. Overly stressing the median nerve can lead to the aching wrist and numb fingers associated with CTS. Additionally, hormone fluctuations can put patients at higher risk for CTS. This means pregnant women, and women between the ages of 34-60, may be more likely to develop CTS.

Early intervention — especially physical therapy — may help you avoid surgery. Physical therapists use hand and arm movements designed to build flexibility and strength. These movements decrease CTS pain and numbness while easing inflammation and decreasing pressure on the median nerve.

Our physical therapists will show you how to stretch your carpal ligaments and perform repetitive tasks to prevent injury.

Additional Conditions

While CTS is a common issue we treat, our physical therapists treat numerous conditions affecting the hands, elbows, and wrists. Among them are:

  • Joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Tennis/Golf Elbow
  • Fractures
  • Sprains

How are these conditions treated?

The first step in dealing with hand, wrist, or elbow pain is determining the source of the pain. This is often done in conjunction with your primary care physician. Our physical therapists determine the specific hand and arm positions at which you experience pain in addition to assessing your current strength and flexibility.

After your evaluation, the first priority is to get rid of the pain as soon as possible. After that, our physical therapist will begin to focus on building up your range of motion (stretching and flexibility). Finally, we will add strength-building exercises. Strengthening is critical so you can maintain your pain-free life after your treatment.
